The famous choro Carinhoso, arranged for clarinet quintet

VIDEO

The great Pixinguinha, whose real name was Alfredo da Rocha Viana Filho, was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1897 and died in the same city in 1973. He was a composer, author of hundreds of choros, musician (flutist and saxophonist), conductor, arranger and undoubtedly one of the pillars of modern popular music in Brazil. The choro-song “Carinhoso” is Pixinguinha's most famous work, with hundreds of recordings made all over the world, and one of the icons of Brazilian popular music. Despite this, its date of composition is not reliably known, whether it was created between 1923 and 1925 or in the previous decade. It was recorded for the first time in 1928, in its only instrumental version. Later "Carinhoso" received the lyrics composed by João de Barro (which you can see below), and over time it became the most recorded Brazilian song of all time.

In the video above you will be able to listen to the arrangement that I composed of this beautiful piece for a clarinet quintet (four soprano clarinets and one bass clarinet). It is a relatively simple arrangement, in which I recorded the four soprano clarinets, while the bass clarinet was in charge of my Peruvian colleague Marco Antonio Mazzini (director of Clariperu). Thus, this recording was made "at a distance" in Buenos Aires and Lima. In the video you can follow the score of the 1st clarinet, which is in charge of the melody from beginning to end, although you will be able to notice that the execution is quite free and in many moments it differs from what is written on the staff. Hope you like.

"Carinhoso" lyrics (written by João de Barro)

Vem, vem, vem, vem

Vem sentir o calor dos lábios meus

À procura dos teus

Vem matar esta paixão

Que me devora o coração

E só assim então serei feliz

Bem feliz

Meu coração
